Federal forestland has been a theme for OFRI over the past year with special emphasis given to dry-side forestlands found east of the Cascades and interior southwest. Last spring OFRI published its latest special report Federal Forestland in Oregon. Then, last August, OFRI’s board of directors sponsored a tour of central Oregon’s federal forests, hosting 76 civic leaders. Continuing the conversation, OFRI is developing a new Speakers Bureau presentation launching soon.
Now, a new six-minute online video defines problems with dry-side forests and offers practical solutions using active forest management. Finally, the video highlights the importance of local collaborative makes solutions possible. The video, shot in and around the Deschutes National Forest, was produced by OFRI in partnership with Oregon State University Extension, The Nature Conservancy, Oregon Wild and the Deschutes National Forest.

Forestry Program for Oregon wants to hear what you think |
 |
Are Oregon’s forests being managed sustainably? A set of indicators developed with broad public input suggests they may not be. That’s why the Oregon Board of Forestry is inviting the public to help shape a plan to improve the health and productivity of our public and private forests.
A 90-day public comment period for the 2011 draft of the Forestry Program for Oregon began on Oct. 1 and will run through Dec. 31, 2010. A public review draft of the document, along with supporting information and instructions for submitting comment, can be found within the ODF website.
Members of thep public can provide input on the FPFO through a listening post format at the following meetings:
Nov. 18 at Central Oregon Community College, Bend
Nov. 22 at the Oregon Roundtable meeting at ODF, Salem
Nov. 23 at Portland State University, Portland
Dec. 8 at Jackson County Library, Medford

Spread the word! OFRI Speakers Bureau training coming in January |
 |
The OFRI Speakers Bureau has been a great tool for bringing the message of forest management to civic organizations throughout Oregon. Of course, one big reason for its success has been the great team of volunteers.
OFRI is inviting anyone interested in becoming part of the program to attend a training session Thursday, Jan. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Best Western in Hood River. This is the afternoon before the 2011 Oregon/Washington State SAF Leadership Conference.
Newcomers as well as current Speakers Bureau volunteers are encouraged to attend. New presentations and materials will be provided.
