Temperate Forest Foundation offers Oregon teacher tour

Applications now available

Every summer the Portland-based Temperate Forest Foundation organizes educational three-day woods and mill tours for third - eighth grade science teachers throughout North America, including the Pacific Northwest.

Teachers are each sponsored by a local business, association or agency, which covers the cost of the registration fee (including hotel, meals and other tour expenses) and round-trip travel. The tours run from a Tuesday afternoon to a Friday morning, and include two days of experiences in the woods with educational stops at tree farms, state parks, learning centers, experimental forests, harvesting operations and visits to forest products mills.

Teacher Forestry Tours highlight sustainable forestry practices and give teachers exposure to credible information concerning the world of forestry and natural resources.
Applications are now being accepted for the Oregon tour, which will take place July 14 - 17, 2009, and is based in Corvallis.

New historic mapping publication celebrates Oregon’s 150th birthday

In recognition of Oregon’s 150th birthday celebration, OFRI has created a publication titled, What Do Western Oregon’s Forests Look Like After a Century of Management?
This publication graphically compares current western Oregon forestlands with those of 1902. This fascinating study shows how Oregon’s forests have changed through time, influenced by natural disturbances such as fire, and man-made disturbances such as agriculture and development. The publication will be printed in late April. However, you can view it now online.

Summer reading stimulates ideas for fall

OFRI has a diverse assortment of free publications appropriate for students from kindergarten through high school. Over the summer, check out Sounds of the Forest, a story book for kindergarten - third grade students and Careers in Oregon’s Forest Sector, a two-volume set written for students exploring careers after high school, with or without higher education. One-page illustrated forestry fact sheets provide quick overviews on a series of topics from forest wildlife to forest fires.

These publications are now available on the OFRI Web site in downloadable PDF format. That way, if you are interested in a specific title, you can easily download and quickly review it before you order a free classroom set for your students.

To view the revamped publications section or to download information, visit the improved Web site at oregonforests.org and choose the “Publications” tab under the “Facts & Resources” pull-down menu.

About the Oregon Forest Resources Institute

The Oregon Legislature created the Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI) in 1991 to improve public understanding of the state’s forest resources and to provide encouragement and training to forest landowners to help them understand and comply with changing forest protection laws using environmentally sound forestry.  OFRI is funded by a portion of the harvest tax on forest products producers.
