 46 percent of Oregon's 62 million acre land base is forested, and about
half of those lands are managed by the federal government. The other half
of Oregon's forests are non-industrial private forests, industry forests,
state forests, and tribal forests.
With 28 million acres of forest lands, a land base about the size of Tennessee,
there are lots of opportunities for people to visit, recreate in, and work in
a forested environment!
The Oregon Department of Forestry defines "forest land" as land at
least 10 percent stocked by live trees, at least an acre in size, or land formerly
having such trees and not currently developed for nonforest use. "Timberland"
is forest land capable of producing commercial crops of timber. Not all forest
land is timberland, and the term timberland does not imply that the land is
or should be used to produce commercial crops of timber.
