Western Hemlock Forests

This is a western hemlock forest, with large western hemlock and Douglas-fir trees, as well as hardwoods like bigleaf maple; it is in the foothills of the Coast Range, west of Corvallis, Oregon. Adjacent to a "Valley Zone" found in the Willamette Valley, this forest is very dynamic: the zone gains in area as trees colonize native oak woodland and unused agricultural lands, and the forest zone loses area through conversion to urban and suburban development.
